書海浩瀚，未能盡讀，因此有「格言」、「語錄」、「雋語選粹」的編纂。然目前所見該類圖書，隨見隨錄，縱有分類，亦感龐雜枝蔓，既無編寫者明確之態度貫穿全書，即條目之間亦時有杆格相違者，徒使檢閱者茫然不知依從。

慈林語錄之編纂，即欲彌補上述缺憾，以取精用宏的方式，藉古往今來偉人的睿智之語、凡夫的肺腑之言，脈絡清楚的表達慈林對人生的態度、世界的看法，期使消沈者得到鼓舞、痛苦者得到撫慰、迷惑者得到牽引、冥頑者得到點化。
