Family-oriented neighborhoods with the most affordable homes and the best schools may be hiding in places you've never heard of
Echelon, N.J.? Arapahoe, Neb.? Lackland, Tex.? You've probably never heard of most of the small towns that make up BusinessWeek.com's 2007 list of the Best Places to Raise Your Kids. And there's a reason: Tight-knit communities like to stay private.
Working with national real estate researcher OnBoard in New York City, BW came up a list of 50 places in the U.S. that offer kids—and their parents—the right combination of safety, community, and education. Whether you're expecting your first-born or preparing your kids for college, our list weighs the five criteria every parent should consider when choosing a new home: test scores, cost of living, recreational and cultural activities, number of schools, and risk of crime.
Why Groesbeck Tops Our List
The results spanned the country: 11 places in Nebraska, 7 in both Illinois and Ohio; 6 in New York; 4 in Tennessee; 3 in Michigan; 2 apiece in Georgia, Kentucky, and Texas; and 1 each in Alabama, Mississippi, and Oregon. And on a semirural patch of land seven miles northwest of Cincinnati, we found the clear winner: Groesbeck, an unincorporated suburb that shares its government, law enforcement, and school system with the Colerain Township.
Groesbeck wasn't first in any of the five categories we judged, but a close look at the town and its people shows a community that provides a good measure of all the things a child needs to grow and prosper. It's not the largest suburb of Cincinnati (it's home to about 7,200 people) or the wealthiest (the median household income is $49,235, according to the most recent Census Bureau data). Pay Groesbeck a visit and you'll find one-floor ranch houses and multifamily condo units lining the streets, with the occasional patch of farmland dotted with cows, chickens, and barrels of hay.
To gauge a community's education options, researcher OnBoard took into account the number of public and private schools in the vicinity and how well the reading and math test scores at those schools stacked up against the state average. Groesbeck's public school system offers parents a choice among three elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school in the area—Colerain High School, whose Colerain Cardinals football team is currently vying for a championship. The town also neighbors one of the top private elementary schools in the state, St. James School, which was honored in 2007 for the fourth time by the No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools Program. To receive that award, a school must be in the top 10% of all schools in the state in both reading and math scores for the current year.
And Why Folks Stay There
On our list, cost of living measures the area's average household expenditures compared with the national average in mortgages, rent, insurance, repairs, maintenance, apparel, education, entertainment, food and beverages, health, furniture, and transportation. Groesbeck ranks just 23rd in this category, but Colerain Township assistant administrator Frank Birkenhauer says "affordable housing, retail, and entertainment choices factor strongly into this being a great place for families."
Birkenhauer adds that Groesbeck has traditionally seen very few incidents of crime—another reason it tops our list. OnBoard identified places with the lowest crime rates by comparing the risk of rape, murder, assault, robbery, burglary, larceny, and vehicle theft with the national average risk.
But perhaps the most attractive feature of the small Ohio town for young parents is its proximity to a wide variety of recreational and cultural activities. There are two parks within a five-minute drive of the area, where kids can kayak on the Great Miami River, play on soccer and baseball fields, or take to the hiking trails. Being close to a major city like Cincinnati is a huge advantage, as a trip to the museum, aquarium, theme park, zoo, or sports venue is never more than a half-hour drive away.
There are new developments in and around Groesbeck, says local Realtor Tony Eckhardt of Huff Realty, a sign the town anticipates growth. But in a place where every face is familiar, he says, "People in Groesbeck tend to stay in Groesbeck."
Doubtless, many of the families in the other cities on our list feel the same way.

To up your odds of living a long and healthy life--despite occasional blow-outs at TGIF--make sure you regularly include these 7 nutritional powerhouses in your diet. "They're the cream of the healthy-foods crop," says Elizabeth Somer, RD, author of Age-Proof Your Body.
1. BERRIES
Why: Ounce for ounce, berries have more protective plant antioxidants than almost any other food. "These compounds not only lower your disease risks, they help prevent memory loss," says Somer.

9月底算是我的第一個政府工作面試的機會，還好教會有一位姐妹也是在政府部門工作，內容性質也很相近，所以可以詢問一些資源。我還記得那天去面試的時候，我就抱著去試看看體驗一下的心情，畢竟沒有比較過怎麼知道哪個工作最合適自己呢？
那天早上到了那個office~~~好大的parking lot，進到office覺得每個人都還蠻友善的，大大的office每個人有自己的小辦公室，整個面試的過程也算不錯。因為他們都是固定的問題，只是工作的本身，好像比較像在做customer services的部分回答一些問題，所以可能要常常在電話線上，而做customer services有時候也會比較stress。總之，就上班的距離和工作的本身，不是那麼的理想以外，其他的都還可以接受。很快的隔天我的accounting manager就接到他們來check reference的電話，一般是他們還覺得妳不錯，所以才要check reference。不過，我總覺得也許政府的工作都會做這個部分吧，也就是說每個去面試的他們都要check 看看，然後再比較看誰最適合。

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Pregnant and breast-feeding women should eat at least 12 ounces of fish and other seafood a week because the benefits for infant brain development outweigh any worries about mercury contamination, a group of U.S. experts said Thursday.
The recommendations contradict U.S. government warnings that these women should consume no more than 12 ounces of fish and other seafood weekly due to concerns that mercury -- which can harm the nervous system of fetuses -- might exist in trace amounts in this food.
But the group of 14 obstetricians and nutritionists said the threat of mercury poisoning remains only theoretical, while the warnings have scared many pregnant women into not eating fish at all, robbing them and their babies of vital nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, known to help brain development.
The recommendations were issued in partnership with the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, whose members include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Agriculture Department, the March of Dimes, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and others.
The nutrients in fish and seafood are important for brain and motor skill development in children and can help prevent postpartum depression in mothers, the experts said.
NO CASE OF FETAL MERCURY TOXICITY
The coalition said it received $60,000 from a seafood industry trade group, but the experts defended the independence of their work.
"There has been no case of fetal mercury toxicity due to fish consumption reported in the United States," said one of the experts, Dr. Ashley Roman, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at New York University Medical Center.
The group urged that women who want to become pregnant, are pregnant or are breast-feeding should eat a minimum of 12 ounces per week of fish like salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel and seafood like shrimp, lobster and clams.
That amounts to about two to three servings a week. It did not state a recommended upper limit for consumption.
"There are some fish that have been shown to be higher in mercury and in other important trace elements such as shark and swordfish," Roman said. "Those might be sources of fish women still might want to stay away from. But the vast majority of fish out there present in the U.S. diet, those are generally very healthy fishes."
"We're not saying that women should eat 21 meals a week of fish. That's not the message here," added Cornell University nutritionist Thomas Brenna, another member of the group.
The experts cited a study published in February in the Lancet medical journal finding that children whose mothers ate more fish and other seafood while pregnant were smarter and had better developmental skills than those whose mothers ate less or none.
It looked at children of 8,000 British women to see how children fared if their mothers ate more than 12 ounces a week.
The Food and Drug Administration and Environmental Protection Agency issued advisories in 2001 and 2004 telling women who were pregnant, breast-feeding or trying to become pregnant, as well as young children, to eat no more than 12 ounces weekly of some types of fish due to mercury concerns.
Estimates on the dangers posed by mercury come from people exposed in chemical spills. No major studies have shown that mercury from food or vaccines has caused brain damage to mothers or children.
"While it's recognized that fish is an important source of protein, especially for pregnant women, this new emphasis on eating more than 12 ounces of fish per week, without mention of the need to avoid mercury-contaminated fish, appears to throw the baby out with the bath water," Michael Bender, director of the Mercury Policy Project advocacy group that believes mercury exposure has damaged children, said in a statement. 美國公民及移民服務局（USCIS）27日正式公布一百道入籍新試題，伊利諾州移難民權益聯盟（ICIRR）對新試題大表失望，該聯盟政策主任曹以仁表示，整體來說，新試題絕對比以前難，未來入籍應試者及教授入籍課程的教師，勢必要花更多時間準備考試。
新的入籍試題將適用於2008年10月1日以後申請入籍的移民，如果在上述日期前已經提出入籍申請、並已安排在2009年10月1日前面試者，都將使用現有試題考試，ICIRR呼籲所有具備入籍資格的移民，儘快在2008年10月1日前提出入籍申請。
USCIS局長岡薩雷茲則表示，新試題不是懲罰移民，而是希望移民增加對美國的了解、加強愛國心，並盡早融入美國社會。
USCIS官員強調，移民可在未來考試中對答案有所發揮，但該局不建議考生的答案離題太遠，因為考官對美國歷史和政策的了解程度也有限。移民當局將對全美十個地區的考官進行培訓。
曹以仁呼籲公民及移民服務局全面加強入籍考試移民官的培訓，以保障入籍者的權益。他強調，官員的訓練尤其應該包括對耆老和英文能力有限者的彈性評估與應變處理。
新試題比目前考題的知識範圍更加廣泛，複雜程度也大為增加。曹以仁表示，原先希望刪除的部分高難度考題，結果都入選，包括「誰是第一次大戰時的美國總統？」、「法制的規則是什麼？」（What is the rule of law？）等，他認為，一般土生土長的美國人都很難回答這些問題，但卻成為入籍考試的必讀題，實在有失公平。他也表示，新的一百道題中，部分問題的語法、提問方式，與原先公布的144道試行考題也稍有改變。
曹以仁說，整體評估，新的一百道試題難度大幅提高，未來入籍者將花更多時間準備，而教授入籍課程的老師們，也必須投入更多的時間、心力，協助學生通過考試。
他強調，當初公民及移民服務局堅持改變，是考慮使用現行試題移民官將無法讓所有參加入籍考試者，得到公平的評分，現在新試題終於出爐，而且變得更難，如果不加強訓練移民入籍主考官，不但失去改變的意義，反而讓移民的美國夢更遙不可及。

到底是在搶什麼包包，讓大家搶到火氣十足、你推我擠還痛哭流涕? 原來是南台灣一家百貨公司，推出名牌環保包包Anya Hindmarch的限量搶購，貨真價實的名牌環保包只賣五百元，台灣限量785個，一轉手就可以賣到六七千元台幣，加上好萊塢與明星的背書加持，這樣造成流行話題的時尚熱潮，難怪好趕熱潮的台灣人，怎不搶破頭?
這款環保包可是大有來頭，由英國的女設計師Anya Hindmarch所設計，她擅長將個人獨特的照片轉印到包包上，而充滿愛心提倡環保的她，將這款包包請明星們選出自己心愛的照片轉印後拿去慈善活動義賣，沒想到得到好評，引起時尚名流搶購的熱潮，掀起「相片包包」炫風。
Anya Hindmarch為了響應環保，減少垃圾袋使用數量而推出了這款全球限量包，包包外觀就大大的寫著:「我不是塑膠袋 」(I’m NOT a Plastic Bag)，全球共有四種款式，美國、英國、亞洲、日本共四種不同的字型顏色，鑲在米白色，使用帆布與麻繩製成的包包上，因為名人加持，又限量，難怪世界各地都造成風潮。
七月六日台灣正式開賣，沒想到第一天台南的這家百貨公司就造成的排隊搶購風波，其實說穿了，一個原本出發立意良好，提倡環保的包包，有必要搶到這般鬼哭神號嗎？環保袋各家廠牌都有推出，樣式也毫不遜色，商家只是利用的成功的行銷手法，才會造成這樣一窩蜂的搶購潮，說穿了響應環保不只是嘴上說說，搶到了包包就可以稱作做到環保，只要有心，任何的可回收袋都可以當環保袋，哪天又推出了一款新的更便宜的名牌包，是不是又要花力氣再去擠破頭一次？
商家可能沒想到，這樣成功的行銷術可以延用到其他的國家，這也可以說明，人類的心理是具有一定的相似性的，不管你是哪個國籍，只要被輕輕的撥弄，都可以如滔滔之水一樣受到波瀾，只不過可憐的是一般平民百姓，因為沒有任何社經地位，只能用最平凡簡單、所謂公平的排隊方式去搶得，那些在召喚、作為慾望投射對象的名模、影星、大慈善家等社經地位與能見度高者，早就輕鬆享受到廠商乖乖雙手奉上的產品，做為撩撥一般百姓的有力武器，而我們普羅大眾，說穿了只是廠商、名人，一再教育與洗腦的二次利用者而已，加上網路轉手的一批人，都不知已經排到哪裡去的次級使用者罷了。
在排隊、叫囂與殺紅眼的時刻，有沒有冷靜好好的想過這一點，不過慾望是無盡的，在物慾橫流的當下，任合理性都是多餘，套句廣告常用語，「理性購物是罪惡」，也許一切，都要等到擁有了之後，才會更加的清醒。
