Talented people and a lot of money have given Pixar an advantage, but their success has come from their creative ideas. Pixar is known for being at the forefront of innovation by using the latest technology to develop its concepts. While many other animators were still illustrating traditionally, Pixar was taking chances on young college graduates that were skilled in computer animation. They set up a base in San Francisco, far from California's animation capital, Los Angeles, and it didn't take long before the magic started happening.

Pixar's risks and business strategies paved the way for a new generation of animation. Their movies are made using CGI, a special type of computer graphics. Unlike regular movies, Pixar creates locations in computers instead of on land. Actors come into the studio to voice the characters, and the illustrators rely on them for inspiration when animating characters. Pixar movies have also inspired others to follow suit, such as DreamWorks Animation. Although their first release was in 1998, DreamWorks has released nearly double the movies compared with that of Pixar. Regardless, Pixar has changed the way children and adults all over the world watch movies and has consistently offered everyone something to enjoy.

The Center of the Universe 宇宙的中心
by William Ryan

What are black holes, and how do they form?
什麼是黑洞,而它們又是如何形成的呢?

Contrary to what the term black hole seems to imply, black holes are not empty space. As a matter of fact, they are a _(1)_ amount of matter packed into a relatively tiny space. The result is a gravitational field so powerful that nothing, not even light, can _(2)_ its pull. If you can imagine a star 10 times larger than the sun squeezed into a sphere approximately the _(3)_ of New York City, you will understand the concept. Princeton University physicist John Wheeler _(4)_ the term in 1967, but black holes were considered just an abstract, mathematical idea at first. Even though their _(5)_ was predicted by Albert Einstein's theory of relativity, the genius himself thought they only existed in theory. Then in 1931, Nobel Prize-winning astronomer Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar calculated that certain high-mass stars could actually collapse into black holes, and he turned _(6)_ to be right. Astronomers have subsequently found many examples of the phenomenon.

When a massive star dies, it leaves a small, dense core. If the mass of this core is more than approximately three times the mass of the sun, then the force of gravity overwhelms all other forces and produces a black hole. Most black holes are 10 to 24 times more massive than the sun. There are also supermassive black holes that are millions of times as large as the sun. Scientists believe that these _(7)_ giants lie at the center of all large galaxies, including the Milky Way.

Need Kidney 4 Wife 為愛走天涯
by Olivia Wycech

With determination, anyone can do anything.
只要有決心,任何事情都能完成。

Love is a powerful force. It can drive people to do the unthinkable, and when the unthinkable saves a life, it's all the more touching. When Jimmie Sue Swilling was born, it was with only one kidney. She didn't realize this, however, until she was trying to start a family with her husband Larry Swilling. Doctors told her that it was unlikely that she could have children. Against all odds, Jimmie Sue gave birth to not one, but three healthy children. Still, she knew that one day a kidney transplant would be required. That day finally came last year, when, at the age of 76, Jimmie Sue was told that her one kidney was about to fail and she was in need of an urgent transplant. With no kidneys available, she was put on a long waiting list. Her husband, however, couldn't stand the thought of life without his wife, so he decided to take matters into his own hands.

One morning, Larry woke up with an idea. He made a sandwich board sign that read "Need kidney 4 wife," strapped it to his body, and set out with a heart full of hope. Larry pounded 15 miles of pavement in 97-degree heat and a bad knee. After that walk, he received nearly 2,000 phone calls. Still, until a confirmed donor was found, Larry refused to give up, and a few days later, he walked another 54 miles. Larry's awe-inspiring love and devotion to his beloved wife, whom he says he loves more now than when he married her 56 years ago, was the reason that a 41-year-old woman from Virginia was so touched that she decided to donate her kidney to Jimmie Sue. Luckily, it was a match, so Larry can now put down his sign and doesn't have to worry anymore.

Reformist priest praises pope’s new tone, but wants more

An Austrian priest who has stirred controversy in Europe with his challenge to Catholic teachings on taboo topics welcomed recent remarks by Pope Francis on gay rights, but said discussion could go further.Father Helmut Schuller, who has been banned by American bishops from speaking in Catholic churches while on a tour of the U.S. that began in mid-July, suggested that women should be allowed to become priests and said that gays need justice, not just mercy.

Schuller, in a telephone interview, said the pope's words were a "good opener" and that gay people seem to be happy that there's a friendlier tone from the Catholic Church than in the past.Schuller, leader of an Austrian priest group known as the "Call to Disobedience," which challenges church teachings on taboo topics such as the ordination of women and priests marrying, has been drawing enthusiastic crowds during a 15-city U.S. tour that began in New York in mid-July .

The pope raised hopes of a softening of Catholic Church opposition to gay rights when he spoke to reporters during his return from a recent visit to Brazil. Addressing the issue of gay clergy, Francis said, "Who am I to judge?" He also reaffirmed church teaching that homosexual acts are a sin.Responding to the pope's remarks, Schuller said, "I think it's not only a question of mercy, but it should also be a question of justice to respect gay people." On the issue of ordaining women, Francis had reaffirmed the church's ban on women priests, saying, "That door is closed." But Schuller said the question is, "Who closed the door?" adding, "It is not possible to think the discussion should be finished."

"We should not only knock on the door, but try to open it," Schuller said. The Catholic Church teaches that it cannot ordain women because Jesus willingly chose only men as his apostles. Advocates for women priests say he was only acting according to the customs of his time. Seventy percent of U.S. Catholics believe women should be allowed to be priests, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll earlier this year.U.S. bishops, including Boston Cardinal Sean O'Malley and Detroit Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, have forbidden Schuller from speaking on church property. "Those who are not in harmony with Catholic Church teachings in what they speak about should not be given a venue," said Joe Kohn, spokesman for the Detroit archdiocese.

Uniquely UNIQLO 獨一無二的優衣庫

by Eryk Smith
What's the deal with a new store that has people lining up for hours?

T
he day the first UNIQLO store opened in Taiwan in 2010, a line of shoppers snaked around the department store building where the retailer was located. Inside the shop, the _(1)_ was a shopping frenzy as swarms of people buzzed about grabbing merchandise. In the two short years since the first store in downtown Taipei opened its doors, the company has _(2)_ to 17 locations in Taiwan.

UNIQLO has that certain something, and its _(4)_ to success lies in following the template set by business champions from Ford Motor Company's founder Henry Ford to Apple's Steve Jobs. This means they take an _(5)_ product and improve on it by giving it a unique spin.
UNIQLO began as a men's clothing shop in Japan in 1949, and in 1985, a _(6)_ casual wear store was opened in the city of Hiroshima. Originally called Unique Clothing Warehouse, the name later morphed into a _(7)_ of the first two words and became UNIQLO. In 2001, the company expanded overseas, and today they are Japan's _(8)_ clothing retail chain, with outlets in over a dozen other countries as well as almost 800 stores in Japan.

A more important _(10)_ of UNIQLO's business success has been a merging of Eastern and Western aesthetics. Its clothing style is essentially modeled on the West's casual look, but it also has a certain Japanese style that gives it that all-important twist that is uniquely UNIQLO.
